Carrying the Electrical Load
Every motor vehicle today contains a multitude of electrical systems, some requiring more current than a switch or controller can manage without overloading the switch contacts. With the convenience of remote start engines, lighting and door lock controls, processors require relays to carry the load of these many features without damaging the fragile circuitry within the processor.

How Does a Relay Work?
Within each relay are at least two circuits: a controlled circuit and one or more load circuits.
The controlled circuit is a common electromagnetic device that requires low current to operate. When the mechanical switch or processor requires the circuit to operate, voltage is applied to the magnetic device, which will activate the relay contact and energize the load circuit.
The relay contact circuit, or the load circuit, can maintain a higher amperage for an extended period of time without damaging the control device.
